is august

We had houseguests for the last two and a half days, and it was classic summer: a walk along the lake in busy busy Grand Haven, a trip to the west side Dairy Queen, sprawling in front of box fans. And on Sunday night, we dragged the chairs into a circle, held a match to the charcoal, and drank sweating brown bottles of beer. Somewhere in there we ate fajitas, too, and some lime-raspberry cheesecake, and I can tell you that it was such a success that I didn't take a single picture that night. The thought occurred to me, certainly, especially as the sun was setting and filtering through the trees at that perfect angle, and people who live here were talking to people who don't, but then I tipped up my bottle and thought, Nah. I'm not getting up. I'm going to continue sitting here and enjoy this.

And I did.
