Today, for the second week in a row, it hovered at 85 degrees. Look, I am all for summer weather. I like the heat, and warm nights, and jumping in a lake, and going to the beach: all that jazz. But summer is over.* It is the 24th of September. When I get into my car, I should not wince at how hot the leather seats have grown during the day, or immediately flip on the AC.
Besides: come on! Fall! Root vegetables! Squash! Porter! Cornstalks! Chimney smoke in the air when you walk around the block! Pumpkin-flavored things! Sweaters! Long-sleeved shirts with skirts! Leaves underfoot! Tree trunks that get all dark and cool-looking when their leaves get yellow! Nights spent inside reading with a blanket tucked around your feet! Bright blue sky on Saturday mornings! Chai! Say it with me: faaaaaaaaaaaaall!
I have dark jeans and sage going to waste here, people, and beyond that this sort of weather just worries me. It's not like we get to delay fall and thusly winter. No, this is the Midwest: if this keeps up, we'll just skip, sweating, straight into first snow.
*This summer actually ended for me the day that I moved to Wisconsin, because essentially the lazy fun summer came to an abrupt halt. It is hard to have lazy fun when you're sitting in a moving truck in a town where you know absolutely nobody and you need to find a job pronto before you completely deplete your savings. Anyhoo.

I agree. And the mornings always fool you because they have that pinch of chill you think will last the whole day--and it doesn't.
ReplyDeleteAlthough we did get a bit of a taste of fall a couple of weeks ago...and then it was taken away!
God I love sweaters.
