STUDENT
I think I saw you before this class, outside.
ME
Oh, yeah? What was I doing?
STUDENT
You were at the Lakeside Cafe. Looking at the turtles in the pond.
ME
Ah yes. I love looking at the turtles. There are so many!
STUDENT
Did you see the one with the huge neck?
ME
What? No. There's one with a huge neck?
STUDENT
Yeah. It's like super distended.
ME
There's a lot of disfigured animals on this campus. Like that duck with the Mozart haircut who I think also has feathers growing out of his beak.
STUDENT
Right? I love that duck, though.
ME
Yes. Me too.
CLASS
... So can we go now, or what?
ME
I guess. But only if you promise to go look at the duck. Or the turtles.
I need more of these plays.
ReplyDeleteI shall oblige. Some weeks, it feels like every interaction is just some weird one-act play. I wait for the lights to come up and the audience to clap.
ReplyDelete(sigh) I'm so glad someone else gets this feeling, too. It might be narcissistic, but that's really how surreal things feel sometimes.
